HEALTH – AN IMPORTANT ASPECT

HEALTH – AN IMPORTANT ASPECT

Life comes with an expiry date, not only life but everything comes with the expiry date. Every person is worried about their family after their death; therefore many of the people invest in insurance policies, life insurance, and health insurance. They also invest in fire insurance and many more for their business security.

Health has been an important aspect of our life, but mental health has been a topic ignored rather than been discussed. Indian Government has made a positive effect by enacting the Mental Health Care Act, 2017 which aimed at protecting the rights of patients suffering from mental disorders.

  • What is Insurance?

It’s a type of arrangement/protection given to overcome unwanted circumstances specified for any damage, loss to health, life .in short things protecting against unwanted or unknown circumstances.

  • What are the types of Insurance

  • LIFE INSURANCE
  • HEALTH INSURANCE
  • CAR INSURANCE
  • EDUCATION INSURANCE
  • HOME INSURANCE

Now I have seen many of the companies deny the expenses of mental health in the health insurance policy, come let’s see what health insurance is actually.

Health Insurances are plans that usually protect from physical ailments. Physical ailments mean physical damage to the body through various causes.

  • What is Mental Illness?

Mental illness in simple language means mental disorder or a mentally retired state. In legal terms under the Mental Health Act 2017, it is defined as a substantial disorder of thinking, mood, behavior, low capacity to recognize reality in short incomplete development of mind.
Until now health insurance does not cover mental illness, but a circular is sent by the Supreme Court to make provisions to cover mental illness.

The government of India randomly went through 3 health insurance policy where it noticed no wordings to cover mental illness. The circular stated that insurance companies have to make the immediate effect to comply with the mental illness expenses. It says that every person should be treated equally when it comes to health care. The main motive of the circular is to make the insurance companies realize there shouldn’t be any discrimination.

Health insurance, in short, pays for an inpatient hospitalization, not for outpatient hospitalization
Mental illness patients more than in-patient hospitalization need outpatient hospitalization like medication, counseling which should be covered by insurance companies. Various people say that insurance companies have no or limited scope for out-patient treatment, especially mental illness.

  • What does Mental Illness insurance include?

All the long time expenses like hospitalization, rehabilitation.

Later in 2018, the government circulated guidelines by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India that all the insurance companies must provide/cover the treatment of Mental Illness. The guidelines gave relief to millions of those suffering from depression, stress, and many more.

So if you are planning to buy health cover, I will advise you to read the document carefully. It is important so that there is no problem at the time of filing the claim.
